Zephne M. Van der Spuy is an Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the UCT, where she leads postgraduate education. As a globally recognised expert in reproductive medicine, she has made significant contributions to research on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), fibroids, contraception, and endometriosis. Professor Van der Spuy has held several leadership positions, including President of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and the South African Medical Association. With over 90 peer-reviewed publications and numerous international fellowships and awards, her work has had a profound influence on medical education, research and women’s health policies both locally and globally.
During her talk, Zephne highlighted the challenges women faced in their fight for equality and human rights when she started her medical career. She spoke about how tough it was to break into the medical field during her time. She also mentioned the importance of friendships and attended the school’s birthday with three high school friends. The Palmam Meruit Award is selected and presented annually by the school to a past learner who brings honour to Rustenburg.
